Gamify employee contributions

Challenge

Bepensa, a Mexican corporate group whose core business is bottling Coca Cola, wanted to encourage opportunities and contributions from its employees in different areas through its internal app.

Result

Together with TEC de Monterrey, the app interface was redesigned to incorporate gamification systems and improve the usability of the opportunity loading.

Phase 1

Ideation

A big challenge in this project was that the company's internal app was going to be used by all divisions (from finance to beverages), with very different users. Thanks to the Remote Design Sprint, we were able to incorporate people located throughout the vast Mexican territory, belonging to different divisions, which allowed us to contemplate all perspectives when devising the solution.

Ideation looked for potential solutions to improve opportunity loading by employees. This resulted in storyboards (high-level sketches) with a simplified, automated and highly interactive opportunity loading process by incorporating gamification elements.

PHASE 2

Design and prototyping

We took storyboards to high fidelity prototypes including all screens from user creation, through log-in and the entire opportunity loading path.

Based on Bepensa's Design System, we created additional graphic elements for the UI (buttons, menus, icons, images, etc.).

The central component of the design was the incorporation of gamification systems that did not exist until then. Using the SAPS framework, we designed for the app systems of points, rankings, medals, achievements and missions that employees could obtain and redeem by uploading opportunities.

A mobile first design approach was adopted since we thought of a digital product to be used at any time and place, during the day-to-day life of the employee and not from an office.

phase 3

Usability Testing

To validate the prototype, we tested with 5 employees from different divisions of Bepensa. We used Moderated Remote Usability Testing, in order to test employees distributed throughout Mexico.

The prototype of the application was positively evaluated by all the testers. We also got feedback on some usability problems in the design and improvements that the collaborators expected for the platform.

Final deliverables

Bepensa received as final deliverables:

  • Complete prototype 100% navigable in mobile version.
  • Report with test results and resulting recommendations.
